Description
Zurich, Huron County, Ontario. c1860. Sheet iron, wood, iron. Very rare and early figural trade sign for the watchmaker George Hess. Likely made by Hess, the large three dimensional body is made of sheet iron, the loop handle is made of laminated wood and the sign retains its original forged iron hanging bracket. The face, hands and numerals are made of wood. "Hess" lettering appears above the hands on the face. Obvious evidence of weathering, especially the loop handle which exhibits considerable weathering. Original winding crown is now absent but visible in early photographs. There are also modern brackets for hanging the sign flat against a wall. Detailed information is published in "Folk Treasures of Huron County" Bev Walker, editor. Gunbyfield Publishing. 8" x 34.5" Dia.
