After Justus Sustermans, 1597 to 1681, oil on canvas portrait of Galileo Galilei, the Italian mathematician, astronomer and experimental philosopher, in old age. Framed. Dates to the 19th century. The original version was painted in Florence in 1636. It was sent by Galileo to a friend in Paris but soon returned to Florence and has been in the Uffizi collection. Justus Sustermans was a Flemish painter and draftsman who is mainly known for his portraits. He also painted history and genre paintings, still lifes and animals.
