Description
Rare Pair of American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Armchairs, mid-19th c., New York, floral urn crest, scrolled reticulated foliate crest rail, padded back and arms, foliate seat rail, cabriole legs, h. 43 in., w. 25 1/2 in., d. 32 in. Note: See Schwartz, Stanek and True, The Furniture of John Henry Belter and The Rococo Revival, fi. 22. Provenance: The Schoenberger Collection, 1812 Palmer Avenue, New Orleans. Note: While closely related to the work of John Henry Belter, scholars Marvin Schwartz, Edward Stanek, and Douglas True consider a nearly identical chair published in The Furniture of John Henry Belter and the Rococo Revival to be the work of an unknown New York cabinetmaker (fig. 22).
