Description
A RARE AND EARLY PAIR OF SILVER TORAH FINIALS. Brno, 1814. Traditional form. Of heavy gauge. The bases are chased with leaf designs. Further decorated with crown finials. Inscribed along the base with dedication in English: “ANCIENT TORAH SCROLL FROM PALESTINE WITH ORNAMENTS, PRESENTED TO THE JEWISH HOSPITAL SYNAGOGUE BY MAYER SULZBERGER, AUGUST 1901”. Mayer Sulzberger (June 22, 1843 Heidelsheim – April 20, 1923 Philadelphia) was an American judge and Jewish communal leader. A close associate of Rabbi Isaac Lesser, Sulzberger was active in Jewish communal affairs and organizations including the American Jewish Committee, The American Jewish Historical Society,Baron De Hirsch find, Gratz College, Hebrew Education Society, Congregation Mikvah Israel of Philadelphia and many others 6.3” tall.
