Turned knob with 1/2" coin silver collar below engraved J. Rogers U.S. Frigate Constitution 1797, mounted on tapered rosewood shaft with 1 3/4" long brass ferrule, total length 34". Condition Fine. John Rogers (1773-1838) John served aboard the U.S.S. Constellation during the Quai-war with France in 1799 capturing the French Frigate LInsurgente, Captain Thomas Truxton made Rogers prize master of the frigate. Rogers next commanded the frigate New York in the Mediterranean squadron in 1802-03. He returned the following year with an augmented squadron commanding the U.S.S. Congress and during the first Barbery War he changed ships to the Constitution where he relieved the ailing Commadore Samuel Barron. He participated in the peace negotiations with the Bashaw of Tripoli. The peace treaty of Tripoli was signed in his cabin on board the Constitution. He gave up command of the Constitution in 1806, returning to its command in 1809. Rogers served honorable during the War if 1812 as commander of the U.S.S. President. Served his country as a naval officer until his death in 1838 and is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C.. Condition Fine. Guaranteed to be authentic.
