Arkansas veteran’s Southern Cross of Honor, a medal conceived of and issued by the United Daughters of the Confederacy beginning in 1900. The medal was given to living Confederate veterans in recognition for their faithful service, it could not be purchased. The badge itself is in the form of a cross pattée suspended from a metal bar with space for engraving. It has no cloth ribbon. The obverse displays the Confederate battle flag placed on the center surrounded by a wreath, with the inscription “UNITED DAUGHTERS [of the] CONFEDERACY TO THE U. C. V.” on the four arms of the cross. The reverse of the Cross of Honor is the motto of the Confederate States, “DEO VINDICE” and the dates 1861-1865, also surrounded by a laurel wreath. The arms of the cross bear the inscription “SOUTHERN CROSS OF HONOR.:

This particular example is inscribed “J.Cody.” The consignor relates it once accompanied the effects of “J.R Cody,” who served in the 23rd Arkansas. More research is needed to determine the details of his identity.
