Civil War carbine socket, sometimes referred to as a “thimble,” bearing the maker’s stamp of “G. Peters.” Carbine sockets were used by Federal cavalrymen during the Civil War and well into the Indian War era for the purpose of supporting and adhering a carbine while riding a horse.
