Description
circa 1856, attributed to Doe Hazelton & Co., Boston, with brass label "No. 5W", crest carved with federal shield, lidded inkwell, slant lid with felt writing surface opening to open interior, trestle form base, 35-1/2 x 30 x 21 in.
Note: This Desk was designed by Thomas U. Walter, architect of the Capital, and was used in Congress from 1857-1873. Chairs and desks were ordered as part of an 1857 renovation of the House overseen by Montgomery Meigs.
