comprising: circa 1770, milk jug centered with arms of Dale, blue ground with three bugle horns, surmounted with wheat sheaf crest, arms flanked by foliate sprays, the whole surmounted with lid, flower finial, 4-5/8 in.; circa 1760, tea canister painted with arms of Farquharson, Jones, or Moffat, white lion rampant on black ground within gilt border, surmounted with sun crest, gilt and iron red borders to neck, opposite side with foliate spray, 4-1/4 in.

The family descend from William Dale, a warden of the Isle of Wight in 1360, and were long seated in Hampshire. His descendant, James Dale of Blandford in Dorset, born 1722 and for whom this service was made, was a captain in the East India Company Service. He married Elizabeth Gannet and on his retirement he served as High Sheriff of Dorset in 1770. He died in 1794, having purchased the estates of Glanville's Wootton in 1767 settling these upon his son, James Dale, the following year. A manor house was built for James in 1804 and his son, James Charles Dale, and grandson Charles William Dale, became noted entomologists, recording the history and insect life of the area."
