Description

Originally listed at $200

Central America, Panama, Kuna culture, ca. mid 20th century CE. A pretty pair of colorful mola textile panels made from several layers of cloth using the reverse applique technique and embellishing with embroidery. The larger panel is entirely made with reverse applique to create linear and geometric shapes with cloth panels in red, green, yellow, pink, and purple. The other textile features a fantastical creature with a feline head, a bird body, and four additional lengthy necks with snake or bird heads. The rainbow array of reverse applique is complimented by embroidered details such as whiskers and scales. The reverse applique technique of the Kuna artisans is impressively labor intensive and creative. Several layers (usually two to seven) of different-colored cloth (usually cotton) are sewn together; the design is then formed by cutting away parts of each layer. The edges of the layers are then turned under and sewn down. Often, the stitches are nearly invisible by using blind sewing techniques and tiny stitching! This technique is wonderfully demonstrated here, and these would make beautiful wall hangings. Size of panel with animals: 16.75" L x 13" W (42.5 cm x 33 cm); geometric panel: 22" L x 15" W (55.9 cm x 38.1 cm)

The art of creating molas began about 125 years ago when the Kuna peoples moved from the mainland to the islands of Panama. In their new environment, cooler nights necessitated warmer clothing. At first, women created blouses adorned with simple applique borders, but as time went on, they amplified their decorative handiwork until the entire front and back panels were comprised of multi-layered textile designs. Eventually, the Kuna textile techniques were used to create works of art like these wonderful examples. This distinctive art form has evolved into a tradition of exceptionally fine needlework and cherished regional iconography.
