Description

Originally listed at $300

Native American, North America, southern Arizona, Hohokam culture, ca. 150 to 1150 CE. A wonderful pottery jar presenting a bulbous body with a wide hip, a sloped shoulder, a narrow, tubular neck, and an annular rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. The smooth and highly burnished exterior surfaces of the bowl are the inspiration for the "onion skin" designation, and a lustrous red-orange hue imbues it with a wonderful earth tone appearance. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 5.5" H (14 cm x 14 cm)

According to archaeologist Emil Haury, the Hohokam were "masters of the desert". Indeed, Hohokam culture evolved in the deserts of southern Arizona and extended southward into northern Mexico and as far as Flagstaff. It seems these peoples were influenced by the Mesoamerican peoples to the south. They constructed platform mounds and ball courts for ritual activities. In order to survive the extreme desert conditions, they lived along river drainages and pioneered irritation systems. Hohokam pottery was painstakingly hand-built using the paddle-and-anvil technique.
