After Pietro Antonio Rotari (Italian, 1707-1762) "Giovane Donna," European School, "Portrait of a girl reading" oil on canvas, circa 1800, depicting a young girl in a rose silk dress reading a letter at a desk, her head resting against her hand, indistinctly signed lower right and attributed by an earlier owner to Viennese painter K. Wagner (Austrian, XIX), with documentation on back, now housed in an 18th century style giltwood frame. Image: 22.5" H x 25.75" W Frame: 31" H x 34.5" W. Note: The painting is after a work attributed to Pietro Rotari, a photograph (see photo 11) of which survives in the Fototeca Zeri (Numero scheda 66287) at the University of Bologna, though the original work appears to be lost. The work also bears comparison to Rotari's well-known "Young Woman Writing A Letter" at the Norton Simon Museum (Acc. M.1979.18.P). While the documentation to the back attributes the work to K. Wagner, a little-known Viennese artist, Wagner's work is largely restricted to landscapes, and there appear to be no similar works by the artist. Other possible Wagners of the 19th century include Fritz Wagner, whose works are largely genre scenes. The work is more likely to have been executed by an Italian artist who would have had access to the original work.
