Paul Robeson Signed Promo Photo from 1937 Film "Big Fella"
A 10.5" x 13.5" vintage promotional sepia print of Paul Robeson from the 1937 British film "Big Fella", picturing Robeson standing with his hands on his hips, signed and inscribed in green-blue felt tip, “To 'Buddy' from 'Paul'”. Light edgewear and soiling, slight loss to corners, single tape repair to verso, small faint notation in red in an unknown hand to lower right corner. A very good photograph, scarce as inscribed.
Paul L. Robeson (1898-1976) was an American bass-baritone concert artist, stage and film actor, professional football player, and activist who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political stances. Robeson was said to have "had so many talents he made acting seem narrow...He was a singer, actor and public speaker...Robeson could sing the works of the masters; he could play O’Neill and Shakespeare...testament enough that hardly anyone now would dare to fill his part...because there were no ‘ordinary’ black parts save for servants or ‘boys...a great deal of what he did depended on offers from Britain” such as his role in "Big Fella", a musical starring Robeson as a wanderer hired by a wealthy English couple to find their missing son.
