Description

Legendary Apache Chief Geronimo Pristine Clipped Signature, Very Rare!

Clipped signature, measuring 3" x 1.5", n.p., undated. A small card signed "Geronimo" in dark pencil with a typed inscription reading "Great Indian Chief" below, from the autograph collection of notable philanthropist Ludwig Nissen. Written in a slightly shaky hand, features his signature flourish given to the "G" and "r" of his name. Light toning to left side edge with impressions from exerting pressure when writing and minimal evidence of prior mounting on verso. Near fine. This item has great provenance emanating from a large album owned by Ludwig Nissen in this auction with title "Incredible Autograph Album, 100+ Pages of Clipped Signatures & Letters From 19th-20th Century Notables". There are several other autographs from this album in this auction and the album has likely not seen the light of day for over a century!

Geronimo (1829-1909) was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Ndendahe Apache people. Between 1850 and 1886, he would take part in numerous raids, namely fighting against Mexican and U.S. campaigns in northern Mexico and the American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. The mid-1870s, however, saw the forced removal of 4,000 Apache including Geronimo to a reservation in San Carlos, Arizona, which caused further conflict and resentment toward the colonizers. After multiple attempts to escape and liberate the tribe from their confinement, Geronimo eventually surrendered in 1885, upon which time he was held as a prisoner of war for several years.

Today, he is remembered as a brave warrior who fought for the rights of the Apache. Geronimo was a symbol of strength and resiliency, with his legacy still living on today in the form of books, movies, and monuments dedicated to his memory.
