Henry M. Watts Philadelphia Legal Ledger, 1844-1850
A legal ledger belonging to lawyer and politician Henry M. Watts. A small quarto, Philadelphia, dated November 25, 1844, to January 25, 1850. The ledger is filled with copies of letters and legal documents, signed over 150 times as "H. M. Watts", and once within the text as "Henry M Watts." Three-quarter brown leather with marbled paper boards. The volume is missing the leather binding at the spine and the boards are worn, scratched, and soiled. Light chipping to the internal pages with a few loose leaves. Some toning and soiling to the internal pages. Boldly signed throughout.
Henry Miller Watts (1805-1890) was the grandson of Revolutionary War officers Frederick Watts and Henry Miller, the latter had been an intimate friend of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. Watts began practicing law in Pittsburgh in 1827 and was commissioned Deputy Attorney General of PA the following year. In 1841 he was appointed by President William Henry Harrison as District Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and in 1868 President Andrew Johnson appointed him American Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
