Description
1768 Optics Science Pluche Spectacle Mechanics Windmills Telescope Microscope

Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history Spectacle of Nature. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. There was a time when Pluche himself called it La physique des enfants or physics of the children. The main themes portrayed in this work are not simply of the physical, natural world. Take for instance the first volume – Pluche writes, “We are here only to be virtuous” – a moral vision on how we are to live. Spectacle became a pragmatic work of theology through the lens of plants, animals, and the natural world.

This particular fifth volume from the 1768 edition focuses primarily on the mechanics of windmills and optics – see the impressive folding engravings throughout!
