Eastern Africa, Kenya or Tanzania, Maasai peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful spear of a lengthy form with a bottom spike and a massive blade both attached to the ends of a short, central wooden pole. The bottom spike is of a dense form and features several incised notches just above the conical socketing shaft. The blade is also affixed to the pole via a socketing shaft and has a massive, double-edged blade with petite flanges near the shoulder and a midrib that runs along the entire length. Spears like this example were a Maasai warrior's most prized possession and were used to defend herds and the community against predators. Slight bending to overall form, with light abrasions and oxidation to blade head and bottom spike, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Please note: edges along blade head are still extremely sharp.
