Description
Ancient Near East, Sumerian, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennia, Iraq. A very large and unusual white stone cylinder seal used to identify correspondences as coming from a specific individual - in this case, someone of high ranking within the society. Surviving scene carved in deep relief depicting a hunting scene of one archer hunting large ibex, with another possibly slain ibex and crooked spear behind the hunter. Seals like this were rolled over wet clay envelopes which then often housed cuneiform biscuits. Includes clay rollout. Size: 1.25" W x 1.5" H (3.2 cm x 3.8 cm), with rollout measuring: 2.75" W x 1.5" H (7 cm x 3.8 cm)
