An original framed Proclamation from His Excellency the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Nathaniel P. Banks for a Day of Thanksgiving & Praise. Printed by William White, printer to the state, Boston. Dated October 28, 1859.President Abraham Lincoln set a precedent for "a day of Thanksgiving and Praise" in the fall of 1863 during the Civil War to a fractured union, drawing upon a tradition Pilgrims brought to this soil.
