Description
A very large carved wooden dance mask in traditional form of a large circular mask decorated with antelope style horns and simplistic facial features. Such masks, known as Goli (also known as Kplekples) represent the junior male. They are danced as entertainment and at harvest festivals. This example shows handling and wear consistent with field use. The mask measures 32.5 inches tall. Baule peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. Provenance: Ex Mark Fosbenner collection, Pennsylvania, Ex Tribal gatherings gallery, early 2000's, Pennsylvania.
Condition
fair, well weathered and worn, tribal repair to both horn tips.
