The introduction reads in part: ‘Within a few years past, attention has been particularly directed towards China, by her war with England, and since the conclusion of that war, the United States and other nations have hastened to make treaties with the Celestial Empire...’ This book offers views on many aspects of China, including: mandarins or politicians, the Great Wall, imperial palaces, statue, women’s fashion, tombs, religion, opium, food, merchants, etc. It concludes with the view that modern Europe is leagues behind China. Damage to the spine though it remains intact and light soiling overall, else very good.
