Item Details
Description
Very rare wool U.S. Model 1917 tunic and pants issued to Corporal Earnest A. Murray of Summit, Ohio. The tunic bears the very distinctive shoulder patch of the 332nd Infantry, a depiction of the Venetian winged lion of St. Mark, beautifully embroidered in silver bullion and brass wire. The left sleeve also bears two overseas service stripes and a red discharge stripe. The right sleeve bears Murray's sewn-on corporal's stripes. Collar disc includes the 'U S N A' disc on the right, and his regimental '332' Company D disc at the left. There are also three service ribbons pinned to the left breast, one apparently a theater-made Italian Campaign ribbon sewn to the tunic, and an 'Inter-Allied Victory' ribbon. All buttons are present. The tunic is fully lined, and completely intact. The trousers are also present, and also in excellent condition, with leg ties present. There is just minor fraying at the ends of the trouser legs, otherwise both jacket and pants are in excellent condition. Personal items belonging to Murray are also included, among them his dog tag, two photographs in uniform (but not this uniform), draft notice, a card sent to his family upon his arrival back in the U.S., post-war clippings, etc. The 332nd Infantry was assigned to the Italian 31st Division. For purposes of deceiving the enemy, it staged a series of marches in which each battalion, with different articles of uniform and equipment, circulated during daylight hours in exposed positions for both the Italians and Austrians to see, and returned after nightfall to its station at Treviso. On 29 October, during the Vittorio Veneto offensive, it joined the pursuit of the fleeing Austrians, forming the advance guard. Early on 4 November, the 2nd Battalion captured the Austrian position On 24 October, the opening day of the Vittorio Veneto offensive, the Italian 31st Division with the 332nd Infantry attached, was in reserve. It joined the pursuit of the fleeing Austrians on 29 October as part of the British XIV Corps of the Italian Tenth Army, the American regiment forming the advance guard of the corps. On 3 November, after several hard marches, the 332nd Infantry established contact with an enemy rear-guard battalion which was defending the crossings of the Tagliamento River near the village of Ponte-della-Delizia. Early on 4 November, the 2nd Battalion crossed the river on a narrow foot bridge, and—after a brief fight—captured the Austrian position on the far side of the Tagliamento River and occupied Codroipo where it took possession of large stores of munitions and supplies.
