Description
A vast collection of about 75 pins and tinnies, largely Wintershilfswerk pins and similar and similar giveaways, all taken from the home of Field Marshal ERWIN ROMMEL by an American G.I. who was billeted there in June, 1945. There are a wide variety of types of objects from several of the WHW fundraising drives, and May 1, 1936 and 1938 commemorative tinnies. These relics were obtained by PFC Joseph H. Rose of HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Div. who served as a translator. In three included note cards (two being copies) typed by Rose approx. thirty years ago and used by him in his public speeches, he describes several of the pieces present in this lot. Rose put many of the better tinnies and pins into presentation frames which he labeled 'The Rommel Collection' which have similar such cards. These groupings, and other items taken from Rommel's home may be found elsewhere in this sale. According to Rose's niece, the consignor of Rose's militaria, Rose discovered these lots in an outbuilding or garage at Rommel's home. We presume the field marshal obtained them for his son, Manfred. Also included in the lot is a copy of a photograph of Rose seated outdoors at Rommel's home with a jeep in the background, a copy of a card found with another lot showing that a tinnie was 'taken from the Rommel collection in June 1945', various newspaper articles including a ca. 1990 piece in which Rose describes being billeted at Rommel's empty home for over a month and later befriending Rommel's widow, a June 10, 1989 article with similar content, a copy of Rose's Enlisted Record and Report of Separation; a copy of a 1988 Civil War Round Table announcement of a speech by Rose on his occupation of Rommel's home, and an original letter of provenance from Rose's niece.
