Description
Superb presentation document, a hand-drawn and illuminated wedding anniversary 'remembrance' presented to future Field Marshal ERWIN ROMMEL (1891-1944) and his wife Lucie by the officers and staff at the Theresian Military Academy at Wiener Neustadt which Rommel commanded from 1938 until the outbreak of war. This extraordinary document is 4pp. and measures 9.5 x 13 in., with end papers, and is presented in a fine brown cloth presentation folder bearing the gilt insignia of the school, gilt trim, and gold braid. The ornate and very attractive text within reads: 'The Corps of the Officers, and Civilian Employees of the War School at Wiener Neustadt, offer their Commander, Herr General of Panzer Troops ROMMEL, and his Esteemed Wife, most Sincere Congratulations on their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Wiener Neustadt, 27 November 1941' The first page bears a small engraving of the city which has been hand-colored, above the hand-executed color emblem of the city. In excellent condition, with only light, scattered foxing within. This very personal gift was obtained by PFC Joseph H. Rose of HQ Company, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Div. who served as a translator. In a note card typed by Rose approx. thirty years ago, he describes the piece which he displayed at his home and in public addresses he made over the years. Also included in the lot is a copy of a photograph of Rose seated outdoors at Rommel's home with a jeep in the background, various newspaper articles including a ca. 1990 piece in which Rose describes being billeted at Rommel's empty home for over a month and later befriending Rommel's widow, a June 10, 1989 article with similar content and picturing Rose with the document, a copy of Rose's Enlisted Record and Report of Separation; a copy of a 1988 Civil War Round Table announcement of a speech by Rose on his occupation of Rommel's home, and an original letter of provenance from Rose's niece. On November 20, 1941, Rommel, under pressure by Auchinleck, called off his planned attack on Tobruk. On November 24, Rommel counterattacked near the Egyptian border, but he was soon stalled. On Rommel's anniversary, November 27, the British attack on Tobruk linked up with the defenders, and Rommel, having suffered losses that could not easily be replaced, had to concentrate on regrouping the divisions that had attacked into Egypt. By December 7, Rommel fell back to a defensive line west of Tobruk, all the while under heavy attack from the Desert Air Force.
