Description
A terrific war-date compilation of photographs, clippings, relics, etc. gathered by T/4 Fred B. Metcalf of the 1189th Engineers Aviation Battalion, tasked among other things with the construction of crucial airfields on Okinawa and Guam. The 54pp. scrapbook was assembled by Metcalf using manila file folders, most likely during the war. Among the many dozens of pieces mounted within, the book includes a flyer issued in Manila and headed 'ATTENTION: COLORED SERVICEMEN', offering a (segregated) barbecue with 'state side liquors' and entertainment from 'Snake hipped Jerry'; photographs from Okinawa and Naha, one showing a comrade atop a bulldozer, typhoon damage in Naha, 'comfort women' left behind by the Japanese, etc.; Japanese currency, a ration coupon and war bond found on Okinawa; an announcement of an Award of Merit presentation ceremony to the 1189th which Metcalf notes: 'The first Negro Battalion in the Pacific to get this award'; printed photos of the ceremony; and dozens of magazine and other printed images. Overall very good.
