Description
A group of carmin red silk velvet fragments, probably originally used for liturgical vests. The largest one (52 X 60 cm) decorated with lilies and intertwined leaves; two fragments decorated with the same Ottoman-derived motif of three carnations and a small fragment (30 X 27 cm) decorated with an infinite motif of intertwined palmettes within ogival scrolls. The Italian manufacture of these Renaissance textiles was largely influenced by contemporary Ottoman textile manufacture. Venice and Istanbul had in fact a close commercial relationship that allowed Venetian (but also Florentine) master weavers to re-elaborate the typical Ottoman decorative motifs and by virtue of their preciousness, these textiles usually found their way into princely wardrobes and liturgical vestments.
