The present work is based on a sketch Esherick made of Jasper Deeter, founder of Hedgerow Theatre, as John de Stogumber in a performance of the play Saint Joan.
Carved signature and date to underside 'WE 1948' and near base 'WE 1950'. Paper exhibition label to underside 'Whitney Museum of American Art'.
