Description

Originally listed at $400...

North America, United States, possibly by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) - "L.C.T. Y7804" inscribed on underside of foot - early 20th century. Three pieces of art glass, including a lamp shade of a golden hue with a crisscross pattern throughout, a goblet-like form decorated with pulled green leaf motifs that flow toward the iridescent gold and white areas, and a flared foot of iridescent gold and magenta hues topped by a green stem adorned with a striated pattern that is inscribed "L.C.T. Y7804" on the underside. Size of goblet cup: 3.125" diameter at widest x 7.625" H (7.9 cm x 19.4 cm) Size of lamp shade: 5.375" W x 3.25" H (13.7 cm x 8.3 cm) Size of foot w/ stem: 5.5" W x 7" H (14 cm x 17.8 cm)

Louis Comfort Tiffany developed a type of iridescent art glass called Favrile glass in the 1890s, patenting Favrile glass in 1894. The name "Favrile" was derived from an Old English word "Frabrile" which means hand made. Favrile glass stands apart from other types of iridescent glass, because the coloring is actually embedded into the glass itself. Winning the grand prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition solidified Tiffany's international fame as one of the stars of Art Nouveau glassmaking!

Tiffany's experimentation with Favrile glass led to his discovery that treating molten glass with metallic oxides increased the level of absorption and resulted in mesmerizing iridescence. This innovation was a marked improvement over earlier glassworks that were painted over with enamels in order to amplify their brilliance. By contrast, Tiffany's glassworks were significantly more impressive, presenting complex coloration as well as sensitively delineated natural forms and motifs. He and his team could create organic motifs akin to a virtuosic painter.
