Description
Originally listed at $1,200...
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine pottery figure of a female depicted sitting cross-legged with a trance-like visage and a stippled shoulder possibly representing ceremonial scarification. Her serene countenance features a fine-lined brow above heavy-lidded eyes, a huge, protruding nose, and fleshy lips enveloped by prominent nasolabial folds. Though bare-chested, the ancient woman is otherwise richly adorned with sizeable earspools, a helmet-like headdress, beaded bangles, a collar necklace, and a long skirt tied just below her voluptuous breasts. Her expressive pose further highlights her elaborate ornamentation with both arms bent at the elbows as she pushes forward her right shoulder to position her hand on her hip and rests her left hand on her knee. Size: 5" W x 9.2" H (12.7 cm x 23.4 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-Foster collection, Maryland, USA, 1970-2000
