Description
First time at auction…
Egypt, Coptic culture, early Islamic period, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A fascinating doll head, hand-carved from the bone of an ungulate to display typical Coptic features of huge, almond-shaped eyes with drilled pupils beneath a lengthy unibrow, a slender nose, and a petite, straight mouth. Her square visage is crowned by a towering, turban-like headdress and incised collar necklaces that adorn her elongated, tubular neck. In Coptic Egypt, female dolls like this example held various meanings, such as happiness, fertility, and protection. They were frequently associated with warding off evil during dance rituals.
