Vanderbilt Estate Hudson River School Sunset Oil, possibly Sanford Robinson Gifford who used 11 x 19 inch stretchers or John Frederick Kensett who painted similar compositions of Lake George, unrelated to this lot LATE ADDITION PLEASE ALSO SEE another possibly signed Hudson River School oil from the Chapellier Rosenberger family as Lot 145 in this sale, this work, Lot 28 Sunset, oil on canvas, 11 x 19 inches, no visible signature however at the extreme lower right under the rabbet a fraction of an inch high there is a succession of dark marks that may be a signature and or inscription with the first mark appearing to possibly by an F or E followed by a space then perhaps an S as illustrated in the first UV blacklight image however we are very uncertain and two artists with an F that come to mind Francis Augustus Silva and Frederic Edwin Church have quite different signatures and we are not certain the work is signed, mid 20C gilt molding. Provenance: Vanderbilt Whitney family landmark Old Westbury, Long Island, NY studio former residence of noted sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum and great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, removed by our staff this past November during real estate staging.
