Originally offered at $400...
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lega peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden maskette depicting an abstract anthropomorphic face. The elongated head is detailed with drilled eyes, slender nasal ridge, petite O-shaped mouth, and along the upper brow are zigzag incised lines. Peripheral perforations around the chin are strung with a beard made of raffia tassels. The surface is painted in a white kaolin. Petite masks such as this were part of the Bwami initiation ceremony and either attached the body or hung up around the dance area. Size: 3" W x 7.75" H (7.6 cm x 19.7 cm)
