Hirokage Woodblock Towboats on the Yotsugi-dori This 1859 woodblock by Utagawa Hirokage is from his 1859 woodblock series "Comical Views of Famous Places in Edo". This is number 40, "Towboats on the Yotsugi-dori Canal" and features a woman smoking opium on the bank of the canal, while passengers in a passing boat look on in amusement and horror. Hirokage was a student of the famous printmaker Hiroshige, and this series is a parody of Hiroshige's 100 Famous Views of Edo as well as some of Hokusai's works.
