Eastern Europe, Austro-Hungarian Empire or Romania, ca. 1880s CE. A massive wood storage trunk with iron handles, lock plate, and turnkey. The exterior is decorated in floral motifs and the left side panel is dated with the year and initials in black paint. The year likely signifies when this trunk was given as a gift to mark a wedding or birth. This type of painted trunk was popular in Scandinavia as well as Eastern Europe in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. While aged, the addition of some stabilizing feet and a glass top could make this a lovely coffee table! Size: 51.75" L x 24" W x 20" H (131.4 cm x 61 cm x 50.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
