Central Asia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, or Turkmenistan, Turkoman (Turkman) / Chodor people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lovely hand-embroidered talisman tunic assembled from pieces of red and dark blue cotton embellished with nickel-silver ornaments inlaid with stones, glass, and cowrie shells. This poncho like garment is petite - certainly for a child or toddler- the elaborate embroidery and appliques acted as talismans, protecting the wearer from harm - the square bezel contains a green nephrite, and the triangular panels are inlaid with red glass. Note the frayed edges on the neckline and hems, these unfinished edges of the weaving and sewing was often intentional to symbolize the continuation of the child's life. This tunic is mounted on a modern cotton cloth backing over a wood frame as a colorful display piece. Size (collar): 15.375" W x 26.4" H (39.1 cm x 67.1 cm); (display panel): 20" W x 31" H (50.8 cm x 78.7 cm)
