Description
Joel Hunnicutt (b 1963) USA, "Blue Skies" Vessel. Wood turned piece titled "Blue Skies". As is condition, there is a minor chip/paint loss to the top. See images. Joel Hunnicutt followed his passion for furniture to a new life as a creator of incredibly beautiful, useful wooden forms, unlike any other artist currently working in the US. Approximately 20 years ago, Joel signed up for a furniture making class at a community college. The idea was to learn how to make furniture for his home. As soon as he turned the pedestal for the table he was creating, he was hooked. Not on furniture making, but on using the lathe. Over the years, he realized that he wanted to take his love of wood, give it the luminosity of glass while using the forms of ancient pottery. This led Joel to segmented wood turning. He cuts many small segments of wood, assembles the pieces into a rough form and then turns it to the final shape. Through an additive process, he reinterprets the ancient and classical forms and couples these forms with 21st century surface treatments. These forms are made new again with vibrant colors not normally associated with wood. He loves the solitude of his work, it is what often feeds his creativity. Size: 9 1/2 x 17 in.
