Depicts a smiling woman with a pointed nose and curly hair. Matisse entered the avant-garde scene making frequent trips to the galleries of Durand-Ruel and Vollard, where he was exposed to work by Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh. Well known for fauvist works, a style associated with raw color and a lack of details. Other fauvist artists include Andre Derain, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy and Maurice Vlaminck.

From the collection of a Rumford, Rhode Island estate.
