Description
Oil on canvas 36 x 24 in, 44 x 32 in (framed).Ken Aunchman is a contemporary American artist whose whimsical oil paintings are spacious renderings of coastal and marine seascapes suffused with light. When looking at his depictions of underwater scenes, one is inclined to think that the light source is located behind the canvas. Aunchman achieves that effect by applying the luminous studies in light and shadow with the use of pinks and yellows. His latest works are three-dimensional paintings of aquatic life, which he named SEA3D. To create the illusion of depth, he diffuses and mutes the color in the background, while using brighter, warmer colors in the foreground. This interplay between the cooler and warmer colors makes the objects in the foreground extend off the canvas, which is further enhanced with the use of special polarized 3D lenses. The outcome of this method is a multi-level painting that allows the viewer to feel the sensation of diving among whales, dolphins and tropical fish. With the use of a paintbrush, Aunchman creates his work all by himself from beginning to end. His 5 x 7 feet mural called "Ocean Voyager" is on permanent display.
