Description
Eglomise full-length portrait of Young Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) in military garb for the German market. Napoleon carries in one hand his sword and Imperial crest and in the other an ornate hat with plumage. The figure is identified in German text below the image as "Junge Naplion [sic]." Housed in a modern wooden frame painted black. Sight: 12 3/4" H x 9 3/8" W. Framed: 15 5/16" H x 11 15/16" W. Likely Chinese, early 19th Century. Note: The majority of reverse glass paintings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries were produced in China for export to Europe or the United States and often depicted popular subjects such as political leaders.

Condition
Condition is very good, with vibrant colors and detail throughout. Some areas of paint loss include small specks in the sky and clouds in the upper register and significant loss of pigment on pants. Some small scratches are visible in the white are beneath the image. Not examined outside of frame.
