Description
Pair of rare, George III or Chippendale style mahogany knock-down collapsible or folding chairs, likely designed for use on a ship or military campaign. Each with a carved yoke-shaped top rail having a central carved shell flanked by leaves, ears molded in an upturned scroll pattern; pierced vasiform splat with central inverted thistle or tassel, above hinged leather covered seats and straight Marlborough legs joined by hinged stretchers. The legs and seats fold in a concertina manner for ease of storage. 36 1/2" H x 20 3/4" W x 17 3/4" D. British, 19th century. Note: Folding or "Knock down" furniture was made for high ranking military and naval officers. Their folding design made it possible to "clear the decks" quickly when needed and facilitated transport during campaigns requiring travel on land. Due to the nature of their use, formal chairs such as these have survived in low numbers. For further information, ref. XXXIII, 1997.
Condition
Both overall good condition with wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Seats with wear to leather and the centers slightly depressed.
