Description
Eastern Orthodox Christian, possibly Greek, icon painting in oil or tempera and gilt on panel with kovcheg. Painted in a Western European style, the icon depicts the Theotokos or Virgin enthroned in majesty with Christ Child in lap, shown frontally. The Virgin Mary wears an ornate costume and crown with intricate gold embellishments. Christ wears simple orange and green garb and both figures are outfitted with golden halos. The pair sit on a finely detailed throne upon which perch two angels, one to either side of Mary's head. Greek letters indicating the words "Mother of God" are held by the angels. The throne rests on a tripartite dais ornamented with botanical motifs--itself floating atop a cloud--all before a field of gold. With pencil inscription in Greek en verso along with old inventory sticker. 16" H x 11 1/4" W. Possibly 19th century.
Condition
Condition is very good, commiserate with age, with craquelure and scattered gilt loss throughout. The latter is most noticeable in margins, outside of the kovcheg, and on the right side of the throne. With scattered inpainting throughout, including minute areas of Mary and Christ's faces and hands, the largest being a 1/4" x 1/8" area in Mary's left hand. The most visible inpainting is to the right side of Mary's face.
