Description
The photos include images of Dijon and Cessey France followed by pictures of German soldiers playing cards and clowning around; making bunny ears and holding up a pin-up photo. There are pictures of the Tiergarten Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna, images of rock-climbing and mountaineering including cable cars in an unidentified location, a photo of the entrance to Bergwerk Seegrotte (a mine which became a tourist attraction when it flooded, until 1943, when 1800 prisoners from Mauthausen concentration camp were forced to build an underground factory and there produce Heinkel He 162 aircraft for the Reich.) There are photos of what are probably Czech spa towns, with their bathing spots and outdoor restaurants, and a picture of Deutsches Haus, a German cultural center in Brno in the Czech Republic (which would be bombed in 1945.) An officer aiming a gun, a shot of school children on a road near ruined buildings somewhere in France, clusters of uniformed German military, but most photos could be found in any young soldier's album from the era; relatives and friends, sightseeing, uniforms, girls. The subtext of the photos--of what it meant, for example, for a German officer to be in Dijon, France, in 1941, belies the lighthearted images. 130 photos total, captioned only with the year. Most photos printed on 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" paper.
