Description
18th C. lift top, single drawer blanket chest, each end painted with the coat of arms of General John Neville, (1731-1803) the front with portraits of a gentleman and a lady flanking a coaching scene, the drawer with heraldic devices, the top with a second coaching scene. Paint appears to be original to the box, suggesting it may have belonged to the Neville family, possibly the General himself. (The coat of arms was apparently chosen by General Neville.) John Neville fought under George Washington in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War and was a central figure in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Strap hinges. Hand forged nails. Repair to one back foot. Approx. 48" x 19" x 29" H.
