Description
Jonathan Bastian (American, 20th century). Oil on board and painted frame, 1989. Signed and dated at lower right. Signed on verso of frame as well. A fascinating painting of a couple on their wedding day and/or night, the bride and groom standing on a green hill beneath a starry night sky, though both a crescent moon and a fiery sun are visible above. Bastian's folk art style comes through in the wooden poses of the bride and groom and the charmingly naive rendering of the outdoor setting. In addition to this scene, Bastian also painted the frame with red garland motifs punctuated by blue dots and a surprising miniature devil's head at each corner. Size (painting): 18.3" L x 10.25" W (46.5 cm x 26 cm) Size (frame): 21" L x 13" W (53.3 cm x 33 cm)
