Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik, probably Abelam, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lengthy dagger of intimidating form that is hand-carved from the thigh bone of a cassowary ("moruk" in Tok Pisin). The blade is concave along the verso and tapers to a sharpened tip, and the upper joint is strung with a twisted suspension cord. These decorative daggers were used for fighting and tied to the upper arm when not in use as status symbols of hunters and warriors. Size: 14.2" L x 2.125" W (36.1 cm x 5.4 cm)

Chips to upper joint and blade peripheries, with light abrasions and earthen deposits, otherwise intact and very good. Nice surface smoothness throughout.
