Vintage Chinese carved wood sculpture of Guanyin. Chinese, age unknown, possibly 20th century. Modeled after Song / Jin Dynasty examples. This statue depicts Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. A Chinese version of the Indian bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, Guanyin is among the most popular Buddhist deities in East Asia. She is worshipped as Kannon in Japan, Preah Mae Kun Si Im in Cambodia, Quan The Am in Vietnam, Gwan-eum in Korea, and Chenrezik in Tibet. This sculpture shows Guanyin seated in the Royal Ease (lalitasana) pose, with one arm resting on her knee. At the center of her crown is Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Immeasurable Light. Guanyin wears pearl necklaces befitting royalty, and robes which gracefully drape around her body. Condition: much wear and abrasion. Broken / abraded areas. There are a few nails in the piece, which have not properly worn. Possible areas of remaining plaster / paint decoration, especially around cracks and low areas of relief. Incredible attention to detail on the face.
