Description
Hypomnemata (graece) in omnes libros novi testamenti, quibus et genus sermonis explicatur, et series concionum monstratur, & nativa sententia testimonijs piae vetustatis confirmatur.
by Strigel, Victorin
Leipzig, (Ernst Vogelin, around 1566).
2 parts in 1 volume.
304 p., 12 lvs; 355 p., 14 lvs.
With woodcut printer's device.
Size 6.5 by 9.5" (23x16cm.)
Half leather binding with gold embossed spine label and old marbled paper covers.
Part II, with its own title page, deals with the letters of Paul and the revelation of John (Hypomnemata in omnes epistolas Pauli et aliorum apostolorum et in apocalypsin).
The commentary on the New Testament is considered the most important work by the theologian Victorin Strigel (1524-1569), who came from Kaufbeuren and was a close student of Melanchthon.
"His extensive literature consistently identifies him as a representative of the Melanchthonian school, which largely paved the way for (crypto)Calvinism in Germany in its doctrine of the Lord's Supper" (LThK IX, 1114).
"Of Strigel's numerous works, his commentaries on the New Testament and the Psalms as well as his dogmatic textbooks on Melanchthon's works were particularly valued. Strigel was one of the first to take the initiative for systematic historiography.
– Title page backed, with ownership entry and ink signatures.
With a small trace of worming in the lower white margin and (almost) a continuous small wormhole, first few leaves with faded dampstain.
Otherwise well preserved.
Provenance: from the library of the Welsh Cathedral of Llandaff
With corresponding bookplate label on front endpaper.
