Item Details
Description
Edward (Garrett Edward) Kuhlman Delaware, Wisconsin (1882 - 1973) Impressionistic Landscape oil on canvas signed verso. From the collection of Edward P. Bentley, Art Researcher and Historian, Greenville, Michigan. Biography from the Archives of askART: Kuhlmann, Garrett Edward (1882-1973) Born: Ohio. Died: Milford, Delaware. "Oil City Minister is Accomplished Artist: Interests of Rev. Edward Kuhlmann, Pastor of Good Hope Lutheran Church, Varied – is Landscape Painter" Exclusive of his duties in the ministry and his work as an author, Rev. Edward Kuhlmann, pastor of the Good Hope Lutheran church, has been intensely interested in art, and many of his beautiful paintings have been exhibited in the art centers of the middle west. A large number of residents of this section prize highly the works of the pastor which they have in their possession. Although his interests have been varied, and the multitude of affiliations make his life a busy one, Mr. Kuhlmann finds some time for painting, which is his principal hobby and enjoys landscape painting especially. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and the Art Institute of Chicago, Ill., and at the Saugatuck School of Painting at Saugatuck, Michigan. A native of northern Ohio, the Lutheran pastor came here in 1926 from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He prepared for college at the Woodville, Ohio, Normal School, and was graduated from the Capital University at Columbus, Ohio, with the A.B. degree. Upon the completion of his work at the University, he entered the Lutheran Seminary at Columbus and was graduated to the ministry in 1906. Following graduation, Mr. Kuhlmann spent a year in study and travel abroad, during which time he enjoyed a 30-day horseback tour of Palestine. Upon his return from abroad, he was commissioned to do home mission work in Wisconsin. In this field he was very successful, being instrumental in starting three congregations in the state. He established the First English Lutheran church at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and served as its pastor until he was called to Oil City. The minister assumed the pastorate of the Good Hope Lutheran church, located at West First and Petroleum streets, on August 15, 1926, and his efforts to better the local congregation in many respects during the past five years have been exceedingly fruitful. The new pastor projected an extensive building program which led to the erection of the beautiful new parish house and parsonage. Source: The News-Herald (Franklin, Pennsylvania) 13 June, 1931. Submitted by Edward P. Bentley, Art Researcher and Historian, Greenville, Michigan. 16" x 20", 24 1/2" x 20" (frame)
