This is an antique original primitive oil painting on board by Barton Stone Hays (American, 1826 -1914). The framed still life features a spilled woven basket of cherries. Signed lower right.
Hays was a self-taught artist who was known for his portraits, landscapes and still life paintings. While working in Indiana from 1850 to 1882, Hays taught such important young artists as William Forsyth, John Elwood Bundy and William Merritt Chase. Hays' portrait of Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison is part of the official collection of portraits of Indiana governors.
The frame is 17 1/2 x 14 3/8" and the sight view is 12 x 9".
