Description
Ewers are believed to have been produced for Buddhist altars in palaces and temples. Ewers are vase-like pitchers, sometimes called ornamental jugs, usually with flaring spouts and attractive handles. Ewers are primarily decorative. Some are used for flower arranging. Tibetan butter lamps are used usually during morning prayers. Tibetan families offer a butter lamp and water bowls as part of their household shrine or altar. Part of the symbolism of lighting butter lamps is to dispel darkness and ignorance. Buddhist teachings consider ignorance as the source of suffering in the world.
